Pairing a Device to a Printer for Badge Printing

Getting your badge printing environment set up using your kiosk tablet and printer.

Updated over 7 months ago

The badge printing environment in BuildingHub consists of a badge printer and a tablet device (currently, only iPads are supported) provided by BuildingHub to your security or front desk.

  • Once you have your printer set up and on your network, make sure your iPad is on the same network as the printer. You should be able to verify this by going to the network device settings on your tablet and making sure the IP address is in the same range as the printer (e.g. both have a network IP of 192.168.0.xx or an IP where the first three fields match)

  • If the iPad is not already outfitted with it, visit the App Store to download the BuildingHub Kiosk app.

  • Here is an example of what the iPad app looks like when you boot it up, after your badge printing environment has been set up completely.

  • If you need to unpair your device from the system, you can tap the top logo above your customizable welcome text four times, or until the Unpairing dialogue box comes up.

  • If you need to sync or re-sync your device within BuildingHub, choose to “Unpair,” and you will see this screen asking for a QR code to scan.

  • Within the BuildingHub system, navigate to your Devices screen to find the device you created. You may notice that the field reading “Paired?” will say “No” if the device is not paired. If there is only one device, it will automatically be set as the primary. Subsequent devices can be set as the primary device by right clicking the field and clicking “Make Primary.”

  • Because we will be pairing this device, you can right click the field or click the three dots all the way to the right, then click “Pair Device” from the dropdown menu.

  • Tap “Scan to Pair Your Device” on the app screen, which will bring up your camera. You should be able to scan the QR code, which will sync the iPad to the system, then click “Paired.”

  • You will know that the iPad has synced when the iOS version and app version are listed in the device menu.

  • Tapping the BuildingHub logo at the bottom left corner of the iPad app screen four times will bring up a screen that will confirm that your printing environment has completely synced. As long as the Printer, Printing Process, and Status all show a green status your printer is connected. If any of those statuses are red and you have confirmed that you've followed the steps above, you can click the "Refresh Printer" button to re-link the iPad to the printer.

  • Once all of the devices are set, make sure that your Guest Registration printer is set to the one you specified, and you are ready to print badges from check-in. When a print job is sent from the Guest Registration or Vendor Access screens, the print queue will populate to show the status of print jobs. You can individually refresh or cancel print jobs from this queue screen.
